WI Opening morning success
A short back story is necessary here before I get into what happened this year opening day of WI archery.
My wife is all about the outdoors, she just really hasn't ever hunted. Closest thing was she came out with me to check a trail cam and we still hunted our way in and actually had an opportunity to shoot a small buck but i passed on it because it wasn't what I was looking for. Kind of regretted it ever since because it would have been a very cool experience for her.
So this year, we arranged a place for the kids to go, and on opening morning the wife and I found ourselves set up in a marsh. It was actually a perfect wind for one of my better public land spots so I decided we would go there and see what happened, i was very confident that we would see some deer and maybe get a shot at something. I had already decided in my mind I think that i was going to shoot anything that walked by, trying to make it as positive of an experience as possible for her.
We just tucked in on the ground, set up for a 20 yard shot to a known travel route. Right at shooting light we heard movement, and two bucks started coming in down the trail. My wife was actually in the perfect spot and she got to watch them much longer than me, i had to do some moving around to get a shot but I got drawn back on the bigger of the two and let the arrow fly. Absolutely drilled it and we watched the buck fall within 30 yards.
Couple minutes later another buck walked by, and we heard two more deer behind us, my guess is we were smack dab in the middle of a bachelor group and those were probably bucks as well.
Smaller than what I had hoped to shoot this season, and much sooner than I expected to fill my tag, but I am super happy with him due to the awesome experience with the wife, and just overall a great hunt. So great full for this buck.
Now the wife wants a bow, and wants to start putting some time in and learning to hunt. Much more than I could have hoped for to happen less than a half hour into our season.
So now I am actually headed to Nebraska to get a little more hunting in before WI firearm season.

That’s cool. Congrats.
My wife hunted with me a few days for the first time ever in Iowa last season. Really enjoyed the experience and was hoping I could connect on one while she was there. That would have been real cool to share with her. She’s been on a few tracking jobs after a kill but never there for an actual hunt. I imagine that was a great feeling.

It was a very cool feeling. It was right up there with some of the best hunts I've ever had! Thanks

Re: WI Opening morning success
Great story! My wife has been out with me twice, once in a ground blind and the second time in the stand. The second time did her in and she doesn’t want any part of being up in a tree again. She did help me try and recover my largest buck to date a few years ago, but we had to wait until the morning and my dad and brother came to help.
