First Beast Rut Buck
Thought I would share my rut story from this year. This was the first year I’ve ever tried beast tactics in regards to rut hunting (leeward ridges). For the first time, the mature bucks I saw, were doing things that made sense. I saw 3 mature bucks between 10/30 and 11/1 that were all traveling leeward ridges and coming on the downwind side of scrapes.
I went in to scout this area based on onx scouting. I had a big buck on camera a half mile from this area in July, and did a bunch of mid day scouting on 10/30 in the rain. Based on the south wind, I had a feeling a buck would be bedded on the end of a small point. As I’m picking a tree at 1:30, I look up and the buck I was after jumps out of his bed… Definitely a downer, but still exciting to know I picked his bed correctly. I just went 30 yards too far. The forecast was calling for the same wind 2 days later, so I decided to hunt 150 yards from the bed, on a scrape line, hoping to catch him coming back. That buck didn’t show, but I couldn’t pass up this buck at 13 yards on the ground. For a public land deer, I am still very happy with him. Having the pack out with my 69 year old dad, was the best part of the experience
For the first time, it’s feeing like things are starting to click.

Awesome job!
So by “catch him coming back” do you mean that you switched to a morning sit?

Yes. The first time I jumped him was around 2 o clock, so I assumed it was an all day bed, or at least close. I moved one point down based on the sign I found after I jumped him. I was hoping he would be back in there with the same wind. He either wasn’t in there, or was on the same point I jumped him from. Either way I couldn’t pass this buck up, even though the other was substantially bigger.

I hope so. Looking forward to digging into it more this winter. Praying that really big ones makes it through.
