Last day public land 10pt.

Unread postby Bonecrusher101 » Mon Jan 03, 2022 8:31 am

Everyone I know has had flu like symptoms immediately following Christmas. Wife and kids were sick and throwing up and battling fatigue and body ache. I usually don’t get sick, but it caught me too and I had a couple rough days where I just was happy to have the last few days of the year off. Deer season closes today and with everyone feeling better yesterday, I had my eye on hunting.

I was watching this cold front but didn’t know what to expect with all the rain. I had previously been talking to My buddies about where we’d go hunt today. Both were still sick so I was just going to go it alone which is ok too.

I had a spot in mind that has a lot of oaks and it’s on some high ground and I was thinking deer would feed through there with this cold front blowing through.

There was standing water everywhere through the woods this morning. I couldn’t get across one of the ditches and couldn’t get where I wanted to setup. So I just climbed a tree where I hit the impasse with zero confidence.

I was only there till about 7:30 when I heard something behind me. These deer had crept up behind me and when I turned to look around the tree, I glimpsed a buck cruising. I got the scope on him and saw there was a 3 buck bachelor group. The first two bucks I saw were small and one of them started mock sparring with a nice buck with a solid frame.

I hurried up and shot the biggest of the 3 and knew he was a pretty nice one. When I got to him, I saw he was a very nice 10 point! Not how I drew it up and I have to believe in a higher power shining down on this cold sleeting overcast day. The lord has blessed me with a great season and a very nice 10 point on the last day!

It was a wet cold drag out, but I still stopped often and soaked in the cold rain and the thrill of the moment.

Way to end season! Hunt to remember.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.
