Really rough spring
Wrapped up Iowa turkey season last night, and honestly just thankful I'm here to see it.
Opening weekend went perfectly, a nice sit that had 3 big toms streak in at 730 pm and the boy capitalized.
After that weekend the weather just didn't cooperate and my daughters didn't want to go, so I just concentrated on my Ironman training while waiting for later warmer days to hunt. This all came to an abrupt hault when I was going about 30mph down a hill and hit sand. I went over my bike handlebars and had a pretty serious crash. Class 5 shoulder separation, 4 busted ribs, numerous bruises/hematomas, and a moderate concussion. Long story short, if not for my helmet, I'd be dead. Bad news, missing Ironman Des Moines, good news I was able to defer to 2023. More good news, rotator cuff and labrum intact so with smart physical therapy I'll be shooting a bow with no problem. I also didn't land on my face so I'm still pretty. 25% chance I'll need screws to put the bone back into place, but PT is going really well.
A week after almost becoming a pavement patty I decided I better kill a turkey. I gathered up some stuff ,took some painkiller, and went out. With 1 arm in a sling, everything else over my left shoulder, I went out. After a couple of hours a jake ran up and I shot him. Not bad shooting 1 armed lefty with the kids 20 ga. The carry out was a different matter, but he still ended up in the freezer. I also got a solid but chewing from wife, doctor, and physical therapists.
Fast forward to last night. The boy had been wanting to get back out but I do have a lifting restriction. A few calls and I was able to find a buddy who let me go on his place. It was hot hot hot and when the bearded lady stopped at 30 yards he dropped her. All well that ends well.

Re: Really rough spring
Been wondering where you’ve been lately. Bike crashes are no joke. Had a few myself but you fared way worse than me. Hope you heal up quickly with no issues later. Congrats on the turkey.

Good grief man, that’s insane. Thank goodness you were wearing your helmet. Glad you are on the mend.
