Colton's first deer
It's been 2 1/2 years since we lost our youngest son Colton, and he never got the chance to get his first deer. I had looked forward to the day when he would get to add his euro mount of his first deer next to mine and our oldest son's deer. After we lost him in May of 2020, I thought that day would never happen. This past Friday November 18th, a small miracle happened.
I've deer hunted since I was 16, going on close to 40 years now. The last 6 years I've been in a funk dealing with health issues, and then losing our son made things worse. I won't go into detail, but it's really been rough. This past Friday November 18th, I decided to take a vacation day and get out in the woods since firearms season is open here in Indiana, and I had the idea of taking some of Colt's ashes with me to spend some time in the woods with him and at least feel like he was there with me to enjoy it. We spent all day out there and saw a few deer, but mostly just had a lot of thoughts and some personal conversations. No treestand, no blind, just sitting against a tree and trying to make the most of the day.
Right around sunset, as if on cue, I had this small 4-point walk up next to me about 25 yards away and I couldn't pass him up. I knew right away this was going to be Colt's first deer. The shot was a perfect double lung and he ran about 60 yards and tumbled dead. Quick, clean, and as painless as possible. Colton had his deer.
I'm going to make a euro mount to add to mine and our other son's and will now be able to have all 3 of ours together. The freezer has venison again and man does it feel great. There's so much more that deer hunting provides for all of us, so please enjoy your seasons and remember to appreciate just being out there and spending time with friends and loved ones.
Congratulations Colton...you got your first deer. I love you Bub.
