Smells like success
I sit here happy. Last year was a grind like any other, and this year was really leaning towards more of the same. My main goal, each year, is to get the kids on deer, and that happened. Olivia shot her buck and Alex shot his 1st archery deer, so, Mission Accomplished!
I was chasing a couple specific deer when the land owner decided to wage battle on invasive vegetation. The brush hog won, but I pretty much lost my place to hunt as the deer cleared out. A week went by when I suddenly remembered of a piece of public that has held great deer in the past, but was a LONG drive and walk. Up at 0230 to drive, get there at 5 and walk till0545 and be set up by 0600 got old... FAST.
I don't have the ambition to type out all the deets, just know that today was my last day to hunt so I was setting all day. With my Beast stand I like to find places that I can move 50-75 yards and hunt the same area if the wind gets goofy. Yesterday was SW and today was NNW, a little move and I was good to go.
Slow morning in the rain, few does and a couple dinks. At 1000 I rattled in a real piece of crap 8 that needed culling but I was so far back on the land i was afraid my buddy wouldn't come help if I shot him! At 1155 I got up and stretched, then I peed, and then I rattled. This buck came flying around a blow down and by the time I set the horns down and got my bow, was at 15 yards. Seconds later he was dead, beat mode had been activated.
The blood trail was insane, it was like pulling the plug out of a leaky bilge... pics do not do it justice.
When my buddy arrived we were so far back we opted to skin and Quarter him "western style", it was awesome as I've always wanted to do that.
It took me a second to really look this buck. One, he had a huge left side club, I never noticed it when he charged in. Two, he was insanely gray faced, looking at his teeth we are confident in assuming he's probably 7+ years old, but I'm going to send the teeth in for confirmation
All in all, I'm so super pumped this kill. Using my dad's old bow again, putting in massive amounts of time to get in the right area , and sealing the deal when it needed closed made this probably my most memorable hunt ever. Deer was old, huge, and ready for a truck ride. The only thing left is to wash the smell of success off the steering wheel of the truck, hard to get that rank tarsal smell away.
Thanks for reading.

Congrats on an old one
You had to work for him. Getting up that early more than a few times drains the life out of you. Well done.
