Really enjoyed that episode. My hats off to Jamie at the end of that video, trucking through the mud with a stand and 4 sticks on his back. Kid is tough as nails!!!!

Man was I the only one who thought that death yell was dang sad?

Now some questions.

Any tips for people who states do not allow for baiting? I know there is a bear in my area but would not know even where to start trying to find his "local" hang out.

Do they sort of stage like deer?

How do you see anything with that flashlight?

I like it... Its not really a death "moan"... From What I have been told its after they expire, its the air escaping that creates the noise. The thing I like about it is, you hear the moan, you know he is dead.

Set up over crop damage... They are very hard to pattern and hunt like deer. It can be done, but it ain't easy.

They do sometimes at bait, but I think thats because they know its a trap.

Dan,

Thanks for the replies.

Interesting about the air escaping that makes that noise. Still sounded sad as to me but I agree with that it is good confirmation that the animal is dead and not just wounded.

The two areas that I know have recent bear sighting do not have any crops, one is suburban and the other is just out in the woods.

Your last answer did have me laughing. Obviously I am not nocturnal since I need a dang spotlight to get around.

Find the food and you will find the bears.

Dan is right on as usual. Find the food and you will find the bears. Check your local dnr website and search it for preferred bear foods in your area. Some of the faves are acorns, hazelnuts, apples and other mast. Another huge favorite is berries, BERRIES, and berries. Raspberries, blueberries in blueberry bogs, etc. If you can't bait for them but deer hunters can bait for deer, their bait piles will be major food sources for bear. The big garbage dumps are major food sources for bear, as are the big dumpsters behind resaurants in good bear country.

Find the food and check it for bear scat and tracks. Hunting there can work, but I prefer to move toward bear bedding grounds. If there is any kind of swamp, especially a conifer swamp (cedars, spruce, tamarac, pine...) I assume that black bears will be near. If you can tie one of these areas in to your food source, terrain will likely dicatate bear travel between the two. If you cannot find a swamp, anyplace with very thick understory may fill the bill.

When you end up with a lot of experience with bears, you will find that you can go to a swamp and find their dens (bedding area). Their trails are pretty obvious because of their padded feet. You can set up Beast style and hunt- but remember that bruins will travel many miles between food sources which can make timing them tough.

Very cool and informative. I especially enjoyed how you explained the set up and why it works, and then later how the bear approached the bait.

Another educational video by Dan, Dan Jr. and friends. Watching this video feels like I am out bear hunting with some buddies. Unlike the other ones where I feel like I'm walking through a Cabela's store.

Good Job!

Nice show. I liked it. I wish I would have some of these tips and tactics when I tried Bear hunting a couple of years ago. I may have to apply for another bear tag. Keep em coming.
