I’ve been seeing mixed bags as well. Some good, some empty.

Ultimately, I suppose that’s good if you can find that one hot tree, rather than deciphering a whole forest of them.

Agreed. I’ve read that red oaks produce every other year; is this true?

Good question. Looks like a mix…

How Often Do Oak Trees Produce Acorns?

There are two main categories of oak trees: white oaks and red oaks. Both groups produce a crop of acorns annually, but the method of production varies slightly.

White oaks will produce a crop of acorns in about 3 months, or a single growing season. Some white oak species include burr, post, and chinkapin oaks.

Red oaks need 15 months, or two growing seasons, to produce a crop of acorns. Red oak species such as the pin oak and willow oak typically have a mix of mature and immature acorns during any given autumn.

It seems 2-3 weeks early. My food plots transitioning to the bean fields have been slow. The deer seem to be focusing on acorns rather than green sources.

Took my 2 girls to some hill country public today. West central/SW Wisconsin. There are SOME oaks producing. Diffentally NOT a bumper crop. Shagbark hickory were sparse also, some but not many. The shags had a horrible year last year but the bitternut hickory trees had a bumper crop in 2020.

I wasn’t in SW WI, but that mirrors what I’ve seen. The best I’ve seen were burr oaks, but they look tapped out now. Some of the whites I’ve seen have acorns but aren’t loaded.

In the end, that’s probably a good thing. Unlimited buffet makes it hard to pinpoint which one they’ll hit.

Recent scouting in SE WI showed some acorns from some white oaks. I am also starting to see some drop in my driveway.
