Days to take off work

Unread postby hoosierbowhunter90 » Thu Oct 22, 2020 2:04 am

Hunting in southern Indiana, I plan to take 5 days off work, thinking November 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th, and 11th. What do you all think? What days would you pick if you only had 5 days to take off?

Those sound pretty darn good to me! My favorite day of the year is Nov 7th. I've shot my two biggest bucks on the 7th, so anywhere around that date is primetime to me.

How far in advance do you have to let work know? If you lined it up on with 2 weekends would it get you more days to hunt? I would try to catch a change in weather. It is never fun to plan for the 5th-11th then weather calls for a big weather change the night of 12th.

I really like the 7th also!

I thankfully work for my dads company so I can really take about whatever days. so if needed I could switch the 5th and 6th for the 12th and 13th. Last year I had to do that because the weather was too warm. But this year it looks like We could have some weather in the 40s first week of November, at least that's what I was banking on!

I’ve seen the most of the biggest nov7 -14. It can be lockdown during that time. The big ones move between does or with them. First week of nov you’ll probably see more chasing and have more action. It’s not etched in stone just a generalization of taking 2 weeks of vacation for 20 years the first two weeks of November

Hard to go wrong with any time in the first couple of weeks of November. I'll be in the midwest from the 10th-16th. I always try to work my vacation around veteran's day since I'm a teacher and don't get many vacation days.

Check the weather.

My fav day is Oct 26 and it is gonna be 86 degrees, next two days will be 87 degrees. Tough to hunt in temps like that.

You can't lose with those dates. I'm in Southern Ohio, similar in latitude to you. I really like the the last couple of days in October and first few days in November which is prime pre-rut, especially if weather cools off. I exclusively hunt public and usually take PTO on Wednesdays and Thursdays during that time since there're generally less hunters on public. It's like hunting 2 days on (Weekend), 2 days off, 2 days on (Wed and Thurs) and so forth. You can still get on them while maintaining a reasonable work schedule. Plus I usually find by the 3rd straight day of hunting, I'm worn out and need a break. Good luck to you this season.
On my deathbed, I will receive total consciousness. So I have that going for me, which is nice!

I prefer to take off whatever days the deer are going to be in front of my stand

In all seriousness, that sounds like a reasonable plan, they should be moving I would think. I'd love to take off time based on the weather, but I have to have my PTO submitted far enough in advance that I can't really do that.

Thank you all for the responses. going to shoot for 9th-13th, that’ll give me 7th - 15th to hunt hard. Good luck to you all this season

Really is a tough call for a small window like that. I believe like others mentioned weather is a serious player. Hot weather really cheats u out of productive hours on stand. For myself I think of odds and compare stuff to fishing. In fishing the name of the game is Productive time spent in the strike zone. If your work is understanding then I would play it by ear b4 dropping my vacation. If not pick any days in November and hope for the best. I believe the way u set it up for most days off in a row is the way to go. Atleast that’s what I would do.

Historically November 8th is my favorite day in the whitetail woods. If I picked my favorite week I’d say the 5th through the 12th.

I'd take the 5 coldest days preferably with a brisk wind from 10/31 - 11/20. If you can't be that flexible, I'd go 7-11.
