Had a change of plans. Hunting with a friend this evening instead of by myself. Hoping that he gets his first bowkill.

Setup for my 3rd hunt this yr. Had a nice 2yr old at 30yds last night but couldn’t get a shot thru the thick. Tonight I’m set up on my favorite spot to hunt. We’ve killed a lot of deer here and had multiple good buck encounters. Nice cool NW wind, feels like the night. Can’t wait to see what shows!!
Good luck to everyone out!

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
It’s hard to believe that another season is here and upon us! Just returned from a great elk hunt in New Mexico where I helped a buddy fill his tag and I am jacked to have a bow in my hand.
Setup overlooking a thick willow bedding patch. A handful of runs and 2 fresh scrapes right behind me. Hoping no one has been in here yet this season.
Good luck everyone

Son took this buck this morning. Nice Florida public land swamp buck. 2 years in a row he has beat me and his brother to the first deer of the season now. Pretty good considering he has only been hunting 2 years...making us look bad.

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Had a really fun hunt!! I purposely picked this hay field because I knew we’d see deer. Just wasn’t sure how close.
Here’s our hush selfie
The does were super spooky and the field cleared 3 different times… once when I was at full draw I’m pretty sure it was due to a vehicle pulling in 1/2 mile away.
It was a group of 6 does and fawns and I had a nice fattie picked out. She was at 28 yards and I thought it was gonna be lights out. I needed 3-4 more seconds. Oh well. A public land ground pound doe with a 6 year old “commentator” would have been pretty neat.
I set my dad up on the alternate exit from the bedding I hunted Sunday and he had a good hunt. Saw 4 young bucks (all spikes, oddly) and a couple does. Nothing in range.
I’m going to consider that one burned for a bit. In the morning I’m taking Charli “hunting” then in the evening I’m gonna go after something big. Probably take Sunday off with the 81 degree temps.

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Let my first arrow ever go on a 5x5 or possibly smaller 6x6 elk. Was at full draw for an extended period of time and end up taking a marginal shot that I know better than to take. Decision making wasn't the best in the moment. Sounded like impact, but could find arrow. Saw it run over a knob 80 yards off between two trees. No blood there at all...no blood period. Not sure if clean miss and buried arrow or stuck arrow in high/low in a spot that didn't bleed.
Long story short, bad choices, bad result.

Dang it. Try not to beat yourself up over the shot choice. Decision making in the moment of truth is a challenge. No doubt about it. Anyone who hunts enough will eventually take a shot they wish they could have back. I know I have.
