Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Bumped 2 on the way in. Saw a doe right off the bat and just saw another one. 75 yards. Might have been the same doe
Crazy thick in here. Tons of new leaf litter made finding tracks tricky… all I saw on the way in was doe and fawn tracks. Scrape line I found this spring doesn’t have a single scrape opened up. No fresh rubs.
Gonna whack a doe if I get the chance.

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
I killed a coyote tonight with the bow.
My first coyote kill.
He came along the buck trail to the fresh scrapes smelling them
I sent a arrow through his vitals he ran about 70 yards across a swamp drainage and died on the other side.
Wish it was a buck but at least I hopefully helped the future deer herd in the area by taking out a predator.
Hunt definitely didn't go as I planned.

Well, that was my opportunity and I blew it. Air mailed one over his back at 40. Shakin like a leaf.
Really nice 10pt.
So much fun. Maybe he will be back. Bow hunting is hard.

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Found a big rub that centered at my waist or higher. Followed a trail into an area I’ve had bucks bed before. It was tore up. Fresh crap. Had to pull a ground hunt. Heard him get up and come right down the pipe. 20 yds and couldn’t see much of him. I knew he was dangerously close to my scent trail. Then he stopped and bugged out. Could hear his rack crashing through the trees. So close

Congrats killers. I didn't even get setup tonight. Just scouted and found nothing worth sitting. Did find a buck bed with a waist high rub in it from early in the year. Doesn't look likes it's been used in awhile.

No action at all this morning.
Walked a lot this evening, but ended up hunting an easy spot. I could’ve killed a couple different does, but chose to pass. Showed them a little mercy this evening. Maybe they’ll remember that and drag a buck by in a couple weeks.

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Been eyeing up this island for awhile and had a good wind. Found it e-scouting and was pretty convinced it had oaks. Surrounded by a marsh and only easier access is through a rich guys back yard.
No parking anywhere near where I had to bail in so I walked 1/4 mile and bailed in. Immediately found red hot deer sign in marsh ans found a few beds. Hung a cam near trail intersection that leads to beds.
Crossed marsh and made my way onto island. Wind was wonky compared to forecast (shocking right?) so I set up 20 yards from marsh so thermals would pull my scent down. Both islands connect via a small pinch point right in front of my tree.
Wasn’t there 10 minutes and a doe went bye. She fed around me for a bit then walked off.
About 6pm a small basket bucket comes by and I let him be. He was 18 yards away.
645 an 8 comes from same place the other deer came from. I was going to shoot him if he did what other deer did. Drew bow and had him at 18. Was waiting for him to turn left but instead he went straight so he lived another day.
Going to get back in there from another angle next week. Tempted to go back in tomorrow but we will see.
Both of my cells cams had small bucks moving before dark today with the weather change.
Fun hunt. Getting pretty damn good at looking an map and finding isolated pockets of deer.

Got setup on a north west south east running finger ridge with spring scouted bedding on the tip. I'm 90 yards from the closest bed I have marked but 150ish from what I think are the primo beds. Would like to get close but it's pretty open up here and I dont think i have enough cover. Wind is perfect for my setup could have a little more north for the deer tho. Hopefully something's home. Probably shooting just about anything tonight so we will see. Good luck to everyone out
Could've done without the amber alert I just got. Damn that sucks. Maybe its windy enough it won't matter tho
Didn't see anything not sure if they just weren't there or I blew them out. And to top the night off i fell going down a steep ridge and landed squarely on my bow popping the string off the cam. Was able to roll it back on in my garage and I'll have to shoot it but I think its fine. Wasn't my night but still a good time to be in the woods

Nothing else after that. The paddle out of there made my night! Slough was like glass. It was incredibly peaceful.

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Was planning on hunting a remote island but when I got out there none of the sign was fresh so made today a scouting trip that was fairly unproductive. Quite a few little rubs but no scrapes or rubs worth going back too.

Congrats to all who had success.
Tried a new spot tonight. Should have got out earlier as they were combining the corn field across the road. A small buck and doe were moving down the tree row where I planned to set up on the walk in. Then had does that came out of the corn get down wind of me. Learned a few things about the spot for future hunts.

Well...not how a guy draws it up...a little low, clean miss.

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Ended up seeing about 10 does and fawns, 20 turkeys, and three big bucks. One REAL big, one narrow and tight, and the 10pt I missed they came back out but out of range. I’m gonna try again tomorrow night if the wind is from the north again, I’ll move closer to where the bucks came out, it’s worth a shot.
Those 3 bucks were all bucks I would shoot no questions asked. And I only need one.
Good luck to those going out in the morning!

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
No deer seen, 20 minutes left of shooting light and a coyote steps out. Couldn’t help myself and needed the confidence of shooting. Recently had some custom arrows made and they weren’t grouping well. I went with only 2 of the 6 being acceptable for my standards and wanted to check to make sure they were on point. At least 1 of those 2 make the cut, it blew through that mutt no problem!
