Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Well, opening morning was successful in the since of seeing deer and checking out some rough to get to spots.
Mosquitos drew the first blood I think they got a liter out of me Saturday.
Saw 9 bucks sparring and figuring things out two with serious potential in the coming years but may not make it if they act like teenagers during the rut. One was a very young 8 maybe 1.5 y/o likely touching 100 inches but pencil tined he seemed to be a bully. The other was likely a 2.5y/o 7 bigger body and a lot more mass than the 8 but less width to his rack he was a lot more laid back and new his place in the group only getting involved in the sparring shenanigan's if the 8 insisted and when they went at it the 7 brought the heat.
About the spot, buck bedding on a ridge with correct wind next to a funnel in a swampy creek bed. I hunted the funnel.
The deer all funneled off the hill and into the creek bottom and returned to the hill after feeding on what I assume is a muscadine vine. They were all interested in this one particular tree across the creek from where I sat. I had no interest in putting my scent in the area to find out exactly what they were feeding on as the ridge systems seems to have the potential to house a more mature deer that wasn't with the bachelor group.
Assuming wind is correct again next week I will approach the bedding area from the other side further up the creek and give it a shot. The sign was there last season. I don't know if these deer have been pressured enough yet to become predictable in their bedding locations yet, time will tell. I was the only person hunting on 600 acres this weekend surprisingly. I have a feeling the more mature deer in the area are smart enough to only feed in this swamp/funnel at night. I feel the area has potential based on sign but I stay out of the area as much as possible including not running cameras.

Re: Live from the field 2021-2022
Oh man. This is getting REAL. I’m checking the forecast for wind direction for the weekend. I know it will change 6 times in 5 days, but that’s beside the point
Here’s my tentative plan since my wife is going to be gone.
1) have the neighbors watch my kids Friday night so I can observe.
2) bring the kids to my moms late morning Saturday.
3) scout around and check cams
4) hunt
5) hope my mom keeps the kids overnight so I can hunt Sunday morning.
6) hope my wife gets back in time to hunt Sunday night. No reason she shouldn’t be.
Sounds like a deer killing plan to me!

Had a sliding ladder slip and smash couple of toes yesterday, I don't think anything is broken but I will surely be limping around the woods and less mobile than usual this weekend.

i did the same to my ankle the night before turkey season this year. I still managed to hobble out and get a turkey on third day. Where there is a will there is a way.

Man! Sorry to hear that. Foot injuries are the bane of the mobile hunters existence, hope it gets well soon.
