Expandables or fixed?

Just looking to take a poll and get a general consensus from others out there.

Do you shoot expandables or fixed and why? Also what grain broadhead are you shooting? Pros and cons...?

Always alot of debate on this. My opinion is a sharp broadhead put thru both lungs will kill a deer with monotonous regularity. Therefore shoot a good quality broadhead that shoots well with your bow and you have confidence in. Doesn't matter what type it is. I have used both and they both kill deer.

Personal preference. Really what it come down too. I started out shooting Wasp fixed blade back in mid 80's. Now I shoot 100 grain Grim Reaper Whitetail Specials.

I have shot deer "far back" with both and they are just as dead. I've shot deer "forward" with both and in my experience fixed vs mech can be the difference between dead and not dead.

Fixed.

I prefer 1 solid piece their is nothing that can fail or break.
Alot to be said for reliability.

Either Magnus black hornets 2 blade or G5 3 blades.
I think the black hornet 2 blades are slightly more accurate with my bow.

I shoot fixed 100% of the time. Sometimes 3 blade and other times 2 blade. Just depends on what side of the bed I woke up on. I prefer fixed blades for several reasons but the biggest are.....

1.) I’m cheap and a disposable mechanical cost more than a steel fixed blade that lasts for dozens of critters.

2.) I’m a member of the keep things simple club. I’m a believer in if something can go wrong it’s just a matter of time b4 it does. Not much can go wrong with a fixed blade.
I’m also turned off to mechanicals from watching the celebrity hunters. Seems everything they shoot has 2ft of arrow hanging out. Not what I prefer, I like pass throughs and 2 holes.


Shooting heavier aluminums I use a 150gr head and for my carbons i wanna say they are 235 gr with the steel adapter. Never had any problems with either and I don’t go trying to
fix things that aren’t broken

Been shooting 125g 3 blade Muzzy’s since the early 90’s. I see no reason to ever change. I bought a lifetime supply when the original company sold out. That’s how much I believe in them.

I get a 5 day archery hunt every 3 years or so thanks to the system down here. As such not real big on tuning bow and such.

Few years back got rage knock offs for say 0.50 each. They shoot as straight as me and kill the deer when can put them inside the rib cage.

Also won’t shoot past 25 yards.

You talking about ones with round pointed tip? I put few on ground with them. I think after them. I went to Trilocks fixed blades.

I use was Exodus and they have worked awesome. Every now and then I use a rage trypan just to mix it up once in awhile.

Really appreciate everybody’s input here. I have been shooting the expandable rages for the last 3 years and haven’t had a problem with them aside from the shock collars failing sometimes, but I know that at some point they will fail on a shot. All it could realistically take is a failed shock collar. I don’t even want to take that chance anymore.

I just really can’t see how you could go wrong with a fixed as long as it’s a quality brand and flies straight and true. I have been considering buying some Sik 4s.

Shot deer with both, prefer fixed... Shooting slick tricks now been very happy with them..

I feel pretty passionately that a solidly built fixed blade broadhead is superior to a mechanical head. What is more important is a close to perfectly tuned bow and arrow rig first, which will create an arrow that can be efficiently launched and deliver a very sharp broadhead which will maximize the chances of hitting the deer in the correct area, and delivering the maximum amount of kinetic energy. The choice of broadhead is a moot point if the bow/arrow is poorly tuned; the system will not efficiently deliver the payload regardless of what is up front.

I also really, really like slick tricks, have been super easy to tune, they just fly great and penetrate very well.
