Re: Live from the field 2022 - 2023
One of the best evenings to be out. 2 mph wind 33 degrees dark grey clouds and ready to drizzle. I kick up a deer 100 yds from my stand I wanted to hunt. I get almost there and the wind changes from S.W. to E. WHAT? I decide there is only 90 min. to hunt so I walk in a little and it switches back to S.W. several times in 20 minutes. My scent likely drifted right into the bedding are. I decide to go to another sport and had 1 hour left. Nice sit, but after kicking up a deer , walking around and wind shifting , I figure I greatly reduced my chances of seeing a deer on the stand and and bet against me seeing anything... Finally , I was right in life. Tomorrow is the last day of our special gun season in Wisconsin.

Re: Live from the field 2022 - 2023
Last day!! I ended up seeing a couple of does very close up this morning and watched some squirrels getting fattened up.
I sat in a promising spot this evening but didn't see anything. I heard a shot not far away just before closing time and got rained on. It was a good day.
According to my journal I hunted a total of 29 days this season with 100 hours spent in stand and I saw 92 deer. I was blessed to kill three nice bucks and a fat doe this year. It was a great season!!
We had a nonexistent acorn crop this year and the oak trees got hit hard by gypsy moths. I spent my whole season focused on green fields and anything green. Usually I spend a lot more time in the oak hills but they were a ghost town this season. I spent more time driving around and glassing which really helped me, I was able to capitalize on most recent information (MRI). And that was an advantage that made a big difference on my success.
Good luck to all who can still get out and have a safe and happy New year!!!!!

Last day of the season here in Michigan. Lots of fresh doe sign coming in. A doe might be in trouble or could get lucky and see a buck. I haven’t hunted since November

Went for a walk today to check tracks and pull a camera along a field edge. First time I've seen a coyote paw up a scrape. I thought it was from a deer til I saw the tracks.

Re: Live from the field 2022 - 2023
So I never updated the dismal end to my season. I ended up feeling like crap on Saturday. Had the all clear from the wife to hunt all day too. Just couldn’t sleep and there was no way I could get up. It sucks because the wind was perfect for my set!! Would have been a super high odds sit for a doe and I know I would have seen plenty of deer.
Oh well. I maybe coulda mustered the energy to go that night but my girls have been bugging to go fishing. And I didn’t want to end up on a tracking job that put the ka-bosh on our sleepover in the shanty.
So I decided to be a good Dad and skip the hunt. We ended up putting 3 walleyes in the pail and had fresh fish for lunch on Sunday!

A little late to the party, but was able to go down to Missouri the other day and fill a tag on a respectable main-frame 8 during their alternate firearms season. Brought my new tracking hound along, she wasnt needed, but she appreciated one last track, and fresh liver dinner, for the season.
