Opening day in Michigan. NE wind. Setup in small patch of timber. Overlooked spot with several nice bucks on camera. Looking for my first deer from the tree saddle!

The area I'm in has some sign, but not a lot. It looks like some of the nice spots in Nebraska or North Dakota or Kansas, but I'm in WI. Might not be as good here. Some good transitions, some pockets of marsh, ag,, swamp, CRP. A little more open to surrounding sight lines than I originally thought.

Goose amd/or duck hunters are going bonkers.

Ok, I was going to set up on the corner of this property but I think I might get some shotgun pellets in my posterior if I do. these bird guys are close

You can also tell that these bird boys have been jonesing for today because it sounds like the freaking 4th of July out here. And they're missing a lot

All yucks aside, today was a birdy bust for me.

Had one shot opportunity at a doe this morning and she stopped with limbs in the way. Stuck around for at least an hour and never found a shooting lane again. Back in this evening. I glassed a big one here the second week of season last year. Draw that feeds down to a bottom with a large persimmon patch and they’re loaded again this year. Got in clean despite spooking a small doe. Never blew and went out the other way. They could be bedded anywhere from my 11-2 o’clock. Some acorns in here but I’ve seen more browsing on leafy greens than acorns so far. The acorns should start really turning loose here in the next couple weeks. Haven’t decided if does are on the menu tonight. Beautiful evening. Good luck to all.

Been doe hunting last night and tonight. Tough going this year. Had a beautiful big mature doe under me at 15 yards eating calmly. I was waiting for the perfect broadside shot, finally gives it to me and as I draw back she got a whiff of me and bounded to 35. She was nice and broadside at 35 but too edgy for clean kill. Hunting a metro unit so I like to make sure they go down quick

Screwy weather this evening so I took advantage and walked around a spot I’d been wanting to check out. Acorns everywhere, pretty tough to find a concentration of sign. Walked by the best stuff I saw and never found anything better.

Back at it tomorrow! Good luck all!

Did see this old bruiser but he’s without backstraps so I let him slide.

Went in blind to setup for a NE wind on a ridge that has a good bedding point. Entrance was clean but the wind started coming from all directions. Something blew behind me, didn’t get a chance to see it so I got down and did some scouting instead of wasting an evening.

Well took my 9yo boy out and sat on the ground in ghillie suits. No deer but he had fun and wants to go tomorrow morning before sun up so appears he might be catching the bowhunting illness. Will definitely hamper my big buck ambitions quite a bit if he wants to start going regularly but well worth it to get him going on bowhunting. Beautiful evening to be out today though!

Had a spike in range. Was interesting bc he didn’t even touch the acorns. Stayed on edge of marsh eating the greens. I’ll probably have to focus on those for next week or so until acorns get hot!

Day 1

Morning set up on the downwind edge of a nasty briar thicket. Around 8:30 seen a couple doe and 1 young buck (couldn’t make out what he was) moving around through some openings in the briar thicket.

Evening I set up on a drainage header in some pretty thick stuff. I only had 1 small shot window but it happened to be in the best spot. Didn’t know it when picking the tree but there was also a dropping persimmon in that window. A lone button buck came through around 5 and gorged himself on persimmons b4 retreating back the way he came. 6:30 here he came again with 3 doe. That’s all that was seen. Try again tomorrow……
