Re: Live from the field 2022 - 2023
Congrats to the killers!!
I never updated yesterday. Things got crazy. Long story but my buddy recovered his buck. It wasn’t a 120-130” ten (again long story) it was my target buck he shot it a couple miles from where I saw him during muzzy. Cold harsh winter plus 10 acres of standing beans equals insanity! It’s got over 20” of splits and trash, main frame 160’s plus the trash it’s a mega giant! And bigger than I thought.
I thought I’d be a little more jealous than I am but I’m not lol. I’m happy for him.
I did see a bunch of does pass by one of my public kill trees that morning. So that was good to see. One smaller buck too.
After that I did a quick speed scout then got called in to work for an hour that messed things up big time. I ran a half hour and did a super quick spot check and that looked terrible. Almost no signs of life.
So I headed back to the previous speed scouted spot. Decided to set up next to the road. Got there and there were already two vehicles there. Went with plan B and felt good about it.
I ended up seeing 11-12 deer all from 15-60 yards. I had a marginal shot on one just under 20 yards but I couldn’t for the life of me decide if it was a doe or a fawn. Then right at last light a big ole granny doe came right down the pipe.
Only problem was they were milling around and she ended up hitting my boot tracks and boogied! I had a couple tiny twigs to clear and that’s how she got me. I was expecting them to be mostly marching from bed to food but that’s not what happened at all. Some were within 50-60 yards for half the night.
Regardless, I don’t really care that she got away, it was just fun being out there and having such an awesome hunt on a brand new piece. I did see one yearling buck… small 8 or 6 pointer.
Saturday is the last day of the season. Hopefully the weather cooperates! I’m not gonna put any pressure on myself to get on a big one… just gonna go deer hunting and have fun with it!
My bank account knows full and well I can’t afford to send another buck to the taxidermist anyway!

Way to stay after them guys!
I opened this thread wondering if it would be any kill stories. Late in the year, but the Beast group are killers.

Re: Live from the field 2022 - 2023
Finally found some deer this evening that haven’t been driven underground. A couple family groups of does and youngins which I’m all out of tags for, but it felt great getting to a spot where natural deer movement still exists.
Season ends next Saturday. There’s still hope.

Re: Live from the field 2022 - 2023
I sat the same stand as yesterday. When I got there I bumped a deer about 30 yards back. It didn't run hard and about 45 minutes later is came back to eat some berries. Looked like a button buck. Just at closing time one of the bucks from yesterday showed up again. This time he kept his distance and hung out and watched me get down, pack up, and leave.
Tomorrow is the last day.
