This thread has given me a ton of information!!! I'm also seriously considering that waldrop pacseat ( I'm not to stoked about spending 200 bucks tho). It would give you the drop on them in grass and brush. I seen on another site some dude waited till after Christmas and bought a cheap artificial tree and uses the limbs as cover. Anyone in here do that? If so does it work?

While you're at it, go to the the All Time Tactical thread at the top of the Deer Hunting forum. Pretty sure there are some good ground hunt threads in it, not to mention a gazillion other awesome ones.

I ordered the Waldrop seat yesterday. It was $250 including the freight. David said he was two weeks out so I am glad I will have an opportunity to work out the kinks before the season starts.

I hunt exclusively on the ground now and comfort is huge. If you aren’t comfortable you won’t be able to sit still. I have spent more than the $250 on other “cheaper” seats and it was money wasted.

I carry a pair of pruners and use what’s there. I cut it at a 45 degree angle and stick it in the ground. I carry enough stuff. No need to carry extra.

It takes a lot less cover to break up your outline than you think. Pay attention to the head-neck “L” and your shiny face and hands. They are uniquely human and they will give you away in a heartbeat.

Awesome videos! I really appreciate all the great ground hunting info. Everyone I talk to locally thinks I am crazy for wanting to hunt whitetails from the ground. I am definitely going to make some of those brush in stakes, thanks for the great idea.

The plan for this year is all ground sits/saddle hunts. I am definitely going to make some of those brush in stakes, thanks for the great idea.

I have done very well on the ground. The reason, is the area dictates how I hunt, and I hunt a lot of swamps. mostly I use a elevated ground blind, that is I get up a few feet, so I can shoot. In SE Wis I get into a lot of big willow trees, up in the crotches etc, dynamite spots to hunt out of.

To me its all about weight. I tried the Waldrop, its made well, but it is too low for me to shoot out of. I have tried many seats etc, all too heavy, for me if it is over a few pounds, it weighs too much. My style of being very mobile, does not allow me to carry weight along. Last year I tried the Millenium Tree Seat, I put 2 xop pack straps on it, it weighs under 2lbs, but of course you need a tree, but it is comfortable. Movement is the killer.

I use a guile, a very light one, paid 59.00 for it at a military surplus store in Fond du Lac. I DO NOT, wear it in, etc, I carry it on my back on a roll, and suit up when I get to my spot. It has an inside veil, and is very effective. I will wear tennis shoes to be quiet, and hunt a lot of grassy areas, etc, that others will not since most bowhunters are looking for trees to hunt out of......

I believe scent dispersal is not that great, from the ground. Your scent is going down, for the most part, and if I am in water and crap in the swamp, scent is covered. 15 feet in a tree, handling a milkweed, and having that go all over the place, your scent is spread a lot farther. I have done my own smoke tests to prove this. You really need to be 25 feet or higher, to give yourself a scent advantage, in my opinion.

A crossbow is a pia, but so effective for ground hunting, since there is no to little movement. One reason I use the compound not the long bow on the ground, is because I have let off, cutting back movement. Plus with the xbow, you can get out and reach out easy at 40 yards or so, getting that shot, well before, you might get caught.

I am a little of a scent nut. but I do not have scent clothing. I use Carbon Synergy powder, my clothes and guile are washed and rinsed with it, and I also have a spray bottle of it I make up to use. most times I also am wearing Cabela/Herter stocking foot hip boots, with a wader shoe. cuts the scent, and since I hunt such wet spots, its a no brainer.

Last year switching from the swamps to the hill country of Vernon County, my partner is married to his tree stand system, which is fine, but I decided to spend more time on the ground,,,,, in our note comparison, I just had more encounters and passed 5 bucks within 40 yards on the hills, while staying on the ground.

Other options like posted is the hammock seat, or the sit and drag,, but again you will need some trees. To me the ideal seat would be one that spins 360 dead quiet, goose feet for the terrain, and a back, fold up and be light. I have found them but most weigh about 8lbs,,,, too much

I like to dig out a hole, when I find the right spot, and there is a big tree down, with a root ball allowing me to dig a hole and have the black root ball, as my back ground. I have one killer spot like that...............

when I do use a tree stand I use one stick, and my Millenium M7, just again to get off the ground enough to make a shot thru cattails etc

I love to hunt big grass areas mixed with cattails, and dog wood etc. I usually will hear the deer, long before I see them, since they make noise in the water

another dynamite spot / system I use, mostly in the UP, is I hunt in the trout streams. I find a good run way, but again, either on a bend, or heavy high grass area, and I set up in the water. One spot I have, I am shooting up, from a deadfall in the water, towards a beaver dam, they cross. again, I have the right boot set up for this. I hunt in the water a lot. They seem relaxed when crossing, the water covers both my noise and again my scent.

In conclusion, you need to be adaptable,,,,,,,, again the ground, I am hunting a lot right to the end, knowing all I have to do, is simply walk out, when I can not shoot. a lot of tree stand public hunters, have so much junk with them, they are mostly thinking about taking down, in the last few minutes, of the best shooting time, I have seen that over and over.

good luck this fall

I use the Chippewa tree seat when I hunt off the ground.

Hot the strap hanging harness instead of the chain style.

Very light, packs in my backpack and comfy.
