Public Land bullies
Hi everyone, just curious if you guys experience the deer camps in your area that try too control the public land near their camps? Here in central/ north Ontario seems too be somewhat common for the deer camps too try too push people off the public, or think they have more right too hunt a public property because they have known about it longer and/or have a camp close by. There's luckily lots of land around here so I can just keep moving when I run into an issue. But curious if anyone else ever runs into this, or is it just an Ontario problem?

Re: Public Land bullies
I think we would all love a chunk of public just for ourselves, but that’s kind of out of the question. I’ve run across some bullies, never in the field, but in the parking lot. They sit and wait for you to come out of the woods and tell you that they have been there for 30 years and try and intimidate you into leaving.
Any time I have seen someone in the woods or I have walked by them or they have walked by me, it has been a respectful encounter. I don’t think anyone likes getting walked up on, but that’s the risk you take hunting public.
The guy who walks up on me is just trying to do his thing and I can’t get mad at him for it. Generally they apologize and move on, I mean what more could I ask for? It’s the people you don’t see, who wait by your vehicle that drive me crazy. Or they leave a note telling you that you aren’t welcome.

Re: Public Land bullies
I’m from Ontario and I’ve noticed property owners abutting the public seem to think it’s an extension of their own. Target shooting into the bush when I’m in there. Illegally driving off-road vehicles making trails and cutting timber. I have one guy follow me in on a 4 wheeler. He was actively searching for me. I was scouting not hunting so I introduced myself and listened to his BS story about having special permission from the conservation officer to drive his side by side. I was polite exchange names and small talked. If he does that while I’m hunting he is being told he is interfering with a lawful hunt and to not bother me during open season and keep his toys out. I even seen tracks going around my car. I make the best of it and take note of the pressure and change my hints accordingly. When I lived closer to a big city it was worse. Deer drives, hippies banging pots (scared deer right to me lol), Rudd hunters, thieves, poachers etc….
a week ago or so I had a nice buck come by but no shot opportunities. 15 min later I seen it sneaking back at a distance . 2min later I hear2x .22short rounds. Then a 4wheeler, then the.22 one more time. I still get bucks legally, with my head held high that I can hunt. It’s part of the challenge.

Yeah, I think they’re everywhere. I’m fortunate to usually have no run ins but there are many people that think they own areas be it they live next to it or they “been hunting here 20 yrs”
I gotta find new areas every yr cus I’m always cycling through spots. More so due to people and not what animals are around.

Re: Public Land bullies
I find landowners that abut the public to be the worst.
Literally had a woman screaming down to my son and i “Youre on private property” right at prime time last Sunday. I use Onx and mark everything around here and we were a good 60 yards onto the public and 115 yards from her house as you have to be 100 yards from homes here. Nature Conservancy even has signs up along the boundary. It wasn’t even close. She kept doing it until i was forced to yell back “It’s Nature Conservancy Ma’am” to which she stopped and went inside and my son asks, “our hunt is ruined isn’t it Dad”.
People like this suck.

Re: Public Land bullies
Last evening I wanted to pull down a stand. I drove around the concession to make sure no one was hunting muzzleloader. I drove by a section of pines the deer like to cross, and there is empty manure bags left along the tree line. Last week I parked to look to see if the buck crossed that way that morning. The land owner drove by, I waved, he scowled. So I think I know who did it. I’m really worried about how far they are willing to keep breaking the law. I’ve heard of tires slashed and windows broken in the past. I have thought about hiding a trail cam pointed at my vehicle while I hunt. My luck I’ll get a pic of the big buck while on my stand lol.

Last night I was hunting not far my car on public. I heard a car slowdown back up and someone get out real quietly. My car was locked thankfully. I could hear the guy say “nope”,and was less quiet getting back in. I kicked myself for not setting up my cam. I figured it’s late season and most of the whackos will not be out.

Re: Public Land bullies
Trust me if most people really hunted it for 20 years their success rate must be close to zero because most people I run into are not mobile. I usually give people "their spot" because I find most public parcels go through waves of pressure meaning alot of attention goes towards it then when people are unsuccessful they move on. I have dozens of spots ranging from 5 minutes to 2 hours away from my house. Opening day of archery I just drive around and scout people then target areas other people give up on. It seems to be a little different each year. If people want to bully I let them win and move on. Not worth the confrontation.
It's all fun and games till someone looses an eye..... then its just fun

In Missouri it's common for guys to post parts of the Mark Twain National Forest to try and keep people off. Some folks never learned sharing in kindergarten.

Rather than a new thread, I thought this was the appropriate place to put this. Michigan hunter gets to serve time in the slammer after getting caught cutting the straps of another guy's stand, causing him a 20 ft fall.

These people probably are the same type of people who hunt the same spots year after year and expect a different outcome.
