Here are some of my first numbers..
40" - 2
31" - 1
27" - 8
24.5" - 2
22.5" - 7

The rub that was 40" I think was a big buck, I was doing some scouting and came up on a big track and started to follow it, his was the only one in this part of the swamp.. I hope I can post this image right. His track was roughly 3.5 x 3.5 w/out the dewclaws.
P.S. I found the tree for him I'll be in.

Thanks for the measurements Darion... To post that image you need to have it the size you want to post on Photobucket and right click on the image, from the menue that pops up pick "copy image location" then go here and click paste

It will look like this except I took out the 1st h so you could see it rather than a link:
ttp://s844.photobucket.com/user/Darion7 ... 60da05.jpg

Then you highlight the url and click the image icon button ( 5th one from the right that looks like a picture of a mountain and sun ) above the screen your typing in. Your pre post image text hoould look like this: ( I took the I out in IMG so you could see it in pre-post form

I like to look close for damage done around the rub too that might indicate tall or wide racks. Here's a sort of meaningless "one-time rub" ... however it wasn't meaningless because of the height of the nicks at the top. I never stopped thinking about that spot and killed a 160" buck about 6-7 days later not far (500 yards).

Here's one from 2013 that had a lot of damage above and around the main rub.

This sounds like a good idea, but how can we correlate the rub heights to buck age if we don't know the age of the buck making the rub?

By the distinct differences in height. There seems to be a jump in height at each age class, or a gap of few to none between age classes till we get to mature bucks.

This is all very intrigueing to me. I wish my disability didn't have me so home bound. I want to be out scouting and measuring rub heights. Dan have you ever measured harvested bucks like a horse at the withers? It seems to me it would correlate with this. I'm really surprised that so few members got involved with this. I know your not into using scents but I once put some Wildlife Research lure (number 307 maybe it was 309) On some aspens around my stand hoping it would lure in a buck. Nothing showed. Only hunting the weekends when I went back in a week later all 4 trees had been rubbed. Maybe this technique could be used in areas away from bedding areas to help research this. Put some lure on a tree with a trail cam watching it. When/if the tree gets rubbed check out the pics. A couple years ago Wildlife Innovations came out with a product called Rubline Slime. I think they still make it. I haven't tried it myself.

Its too bad that there weren't enough participants for this. I think its a great idea and would participate myself but I live in NY and I think the deer around here are a smaller sub-species. I come across all kinds of rubs while I'm out scouting...it wouldn't be that hard to measure them and write it down.

Bump

Since it seems like a lot of us are well on our ways getting our boots in the mud. This sounds rather interesting. Anyone willing to try?

I'm down. Planned a scout with a buddy for sunday. Hitting 2 different STGs so I'm sure will find some. Now what's the guidelines for this. We talking only rubs that look semi fresh or just any rub?

Because of tree growth they would have to be made last season. It would also be important to state your area, cause I am sure it varies regionally.

I'll start taking a few samples on my trips. I think I have 6-8 SGL's to still run my boots through as well as Ky. Heck measuring 10 rubs a trip will only take a minute total compared to the time it takes to write down the notes I do.
