OnX maps new layer showing white oaks/

Unread postby Swedishbowhunter » Tue Jul 26, 2022 4:32 pm

There is a new layer I just saw on Onx that shows "mixed oaks" and specifically white oaks. I tested it out this weekend and it doesnt seem to be super accurate, it somehow mistakes maples and labels them as white oaks. Has anyone else noticed this? I cringed when I saw they had such a layer, as some of the super secret honey holes are no longer a secret.

There’s no way that is accurate. I will test it out this weekend but I don’t believe it.

It’s definitely not accurate on a fine scale, not around me anyway, which is where you find those hidden spots.

On a bigger scale it shows white oak at lower elevations and on south and east slopes which is typically correct.

So it could help someone find a general area but I don’t think it’s going to take much away from boots on the ground. But we have oaks everywhere and that’s basically what it shows. Somewhere with spotty oaks it may be more helpful if it’s correct
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

Interesting. It looks generally correct for my area.

I wonder what it’s using for its an algorithm?

Nice. One more step towards taking the "hunt" out of hunting. Wouldn't want to have to actually work hard at something.

Probably using a soils map to predict the locations - hence your clearcut.

Doesn’t anyone want to get out and actually scout anymore???? Heck, that’s half the fun if you ask me i love scouting in the off season. That and shooting my bow is the only way i can “sorta” scratch that need to hunt itch.

Large acreage of oaks does nothing for me. I want to find secluded single oaks especially white oaks near prime bedding. Only way to find them is doing all the work with boots on the ground.

In my areas of the woods it's obvious anyway.
If it's not pines or clearcut it's oaks.

According to them the information is given to them from a 3rd party and it’s based off of satellite imagery. How in the world they can tell the difference between a white oak and an oak producing tree from satellite imagery is beyond me.

I hunt a marshy area that's surrounded by buckthorn, aspens, and cottonwoods, and as far as I know there's not an oak on the property. I was looking at that piece recently on OnX, and I saw a small spot that was supposedly white oaks. I wasn't buying it, but I had to check it out. Not surprisingly, it turned out to be nothing more than overgrown vegetation with some aspens. On the plus side, I poked around a few hundred yards from this spot and stumbled into a small shed. Anyways, the layer seems to be more accurate in areas that actually have oaks, like hill country. But that also might just be dumb luck since the hill country around me is full of oaks anyway.
