Deer tracks on a golf green

Unread postby Chooch2.0 » Sun Aug 07, 2022 10:56 am

Made a post recently about really trying to hone in on reading tracks in the last two seasons. Some family members & I noticed some walking tracks on a golf green during an annual family outing last week. My biggest challenge in “reading” tracks is my interpretation… “I mean, this is almost a 4-finger track…” I don’t hunt this area, never will. Just wanted to see what everyone thinks of a track like this so I can apply it in comparison, moving forward. Thanks!

My first impression was probably not a mature buck, but either adult doe or sub-mature buck.

I killed an old 16 pt on a golf course years ago. Never underestimate a good par 4, 13th hole! For the record it was a public golf course

It's a running track, hard to tell.

Could be a monster, I’ve seen some nice bucks on golf courses. Nothing I’ve seen never carried over to hunting. Walked up on a bedded buck one time while I was looking for my ball. Was on a slight rise and he was looking right at me. They become almost tame on some courses.

You can see the dew claws left an impression. A walking deer won't leave those impressions in a half inch of snow let alone a golf green. Also the front toes are rather small but splayed way out making it look wider. And the distance between those tracks on the golf green is hard to tell but those tracks look pretty far apart to be walking.

I agree running but that doesn't mean anything it still there somewhere.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

My random internet comment.
The world record nontypical was found dead in a golf course fence north of St Louis. I played the course since I lived local. Approaching the ground crew for permission to "protect" the course crossed my mind a few times.
Currently the property is being developed into a African safari style park owned by STL Zoo. So I imagine the local bucks will be moved on.
