Dominate Bucks

Unread postby oldtimer71 » Mon Aug 15, 2022 1:48 pm

I sat on my observation stand last night o for the first time on a property that I just received permission to hunt. While on stand I watched seven different bucks in a group. Two of the bucks were 140+. My question is: Does the most dominate buck in any given area travel alone all year or will he run with a bachelor group until the group breaks up?

In my experience they will be in bachelor groups until they break up. Even the dominant buck.

I’ve seen them be loners and also seen them buddied up with the same subordinate buck year after year.

All bucks are individuals, I’ve seen bucks together in a group during hunting season. It’s usually a spike and a 3.5 year old or older paired up together where there’s no contest about dominance.

I noticed this as well...wondered why they were always paired that way

Dominant bucks most definitely have no problem at all hanging out with bachelor groups in the summer and early fall until they break up.

Id still be looking for some monster loner bucks too. 1 comes to mind from years back. Bachelor group over here and this barrel-bodied buck in the shadow line couple hundred yards away.

You never know.

Safety in numbers. Some bucks tolerate it some bucks don’t.
