We bought a 39 acre horse farm in Manistee County, Michigan. I would like to improve deer habitat and hunting. I access my hunting using the deep creek beds and the property boundary. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate the input.

Can't go wrong with native oaks as the backbone of longterm food. Chestnuts?

Congratulations! Plant Norway spruce along your road for a screen two rows 10ft apart staggered. You have ag to the East so you might not need much food on your property. Maybe a couple small plots let the rest grow in thick or plant spruce and brush.

Thanks, I have watched most of Jeff's vids (some multiple times). I like his approach. Below is my draft management plan.

Probably a couple of fatties bedded watching the house and barn. Especially if the previous owner hunted at all.
You have a monkey Mr. Munson?

The first thing that jumps out to me is the peninsula of cover south of the barn. I would think about either planting something, or letting it “naturalize” closer to the neighbors crop field. Something that would either encourage them/give cover from the east side over to you. Looks like you have some potential!

Are you going to have horses there? Are you willing to take out some of the pasture and hay ground?

Thanks for the reply. The entire south field is currently hay, but will be converted to habitat. We are trying to strike a balance between the horses and habitat.
