Absolutely no doubt this colder weather has really slowed down the action on the baits. We had two nights in a row below freezing. Supposed to warm up a little now, which should help. I always say bears like the same temps we do, and this cold snap proves it.

So yesterday was the ideal weather to hunt I thought. Cool in the morning but by early afternoon warmed up to about 60. Perfect calm early evening with little to no wind. Could hear a pin drop. Seemed like a very nice day for animals to roam around and eat a little snack. Not the case for me. Seen no bears on a bait that was hit everyday. Wind direction was great for the stand. Took a shower and put on my no scent gear. No idea what may have been up or is it the fact that we really only have a few bears on camera. Ibelieve they are the same and not a bunch of new ones throughout the summer. Some areas may be more populated but our area, I believe, only has a few. The weather definitely had an affect on the larger bears but smaller ones still are here. Hopefully this beautiful fall day will wake up the one I have been looking for.

Here we go. Talking with Mike earlier in the week, he told me he had a dream that I would shoot a bear on Friday. I thought he was crazy because there were bears on camera every day. I really thought I’d be done Wednesday afternoon. Lol, I was wrong. After seeing many younger bears on Wednesday and none on Thursday, I really didn’t want to sit any longer than Friday with the forecast for Saturday wet. The other factor was that my two boys were up for the week and I really wanted to experience the success with them. As I sat in the stand Friday afternoon, nothing was happening. I looked up to the sky and said a little prayer. Mike also went back to baiting the stand our old school way and spread a bunch of Bear Scents bacon gel all over the place. Low and behold at 7:03 a bear showed his head. I raised my rifle and squeezed off the round. I felt great of the shot and seconds after he ran away I heard the low moan of the Bruin. I started shaking so much I could hardly text Mike and my boys, Hunter and Jarrett. Tears stream down my face as I write this because my main goal of this week was to spend quality time with my sons and brother, mentor and friend Mike Foss. I waited for them to arrive at my spot so we could go look for the bear. I thought it was just a smaller bear but when we walked to the bait and 10 yards past, Mike said there he is. To my surprise he was much bigger than I had anticipated. Either way I fulfilled my dream of a successful hunt and time with my boys.

Thank you. It was a great hunt right from the first baiting in May.

Big bear activity is picking up on the baits, wish there was another tag out there. I wanted to share these two interessting photos with you all, in the first photo one might think this is a huge Sow with a yearling but in the second photo its clear to me (am I missing something? look at the time stamp) it looks like a boar breeding the young sow. This is strange activity this time of year. This is one day after Brian shot his bear of this bait station.

If you want to create yourself a Bear Food plot Winter Rye is the ticket, the bears totally consumed all the winter rye on this plot. Look how they pluck every piece of green rye out. I will be seeding heavily this coming weekend, hopefully there is still grow time left. As you can see Time stamp is totally wrong, but this was one week prior to Brians hunt.
