My 2021 Minnesota Bear Hunt

Unread postby Mike Foss » Sun Aug 08, 2021 12:00 pm

Made the 5-hour trek to Fall River Outfitters LLC to meet my Guide Jim Wallner. I've known Jim for years now, corresponded through text and e-mail messages but never personally met him, now that I have, I'm more impressed than ever, I know I have picked one of the best guides Minnesota has to offer. I spent a few hours in the jungles of his area and when I say jungle, its the thickest nastiest place for bears that I have ever seen, and it's definitely not Wisconsin.

Years ago when I finally knew I would eventually book my hunt with Jim I think he was surprised that I booked the "Fully Guided hunt" and not the Semi-Guided hunt, I explained to Jim that I have catered to 100s of bear hunters and I want to experience the other side of the coin.

My time was a short visit but after picking Jim's brain (and vice versa) I have a great understanding of what I will be dealing with. Bear or no Bear I already HIGHLY recommend Jim Wallner of Fall River Outtfitters LLC. Check him out at http://www.mnbearhunts.com E-mail jimw76@yahoo.com or give him a call @ 218-387-2515 or 218-370-1097.

P.S. I hope you all follow along with me on my 2nd bear hunt ever.

Very cool setup, the tree stand actually will be set up in a cedar tree slightly behind that popple tree on the right side, that way my body will be almost completely hidden, all I have to do is lean forward and shoot. Dusted off the bow today, dialed it in for 20-25 yards, shot about 30 arrows, even have the forearm bruise to prove it  . Much more practice to come. Jim has a very nice archery practice area set up.

The first thing I visually noticed when I pulled into Jim Wallners driveway was that everything is organized, bait barrels are secured, ladder stands were neatly stacked, everything looks like it's properly taken care of....... that is a sign of a good Guide, someone who is well organized and takes pride in what he does.

My guide Jim gave me a call on the second day of baiting, remember all these bait stations are established baits, he told me they started baiting at 4am until 8pm opening day, they baited 37 bait sites and also placed ladder stands on almost all of them except 11. Jim told me it was 92 degrees out on Sunday and it almost killed him, almost all bait stations have already been hit by bears.

It's interesting the huge differences between Wisconsin and Minnesota, of course in Wisconsin baiting, starts in April so you have time to preset stands and baiting is for months, so if you want a guy can take his time setting up. In Minnesota, it seems to be a rush-rush situation (being a guide) everything is completed within two days which is understandable. Will post pictures when they come in.

Hunting should be really good... I have never in all my years of hunting up there seen so few hunters, and never seen so much sign... They are going to be a smaller body weight than your used to in Wisconsin with no crops, and no acorns, and with the drought they are experiancing. The last boar I shot up there was around 400 pounds at 15 years old. That same bear would of been a fatty at that age in Wisc. as you know...

I believe if Minnesota opened up baiting early like Wisconsin there would be some huge bears roaming those woods. I've seen a few monster bears that Jimmy has on camera from past years. I'm not looking for a huge bear, I'm looking to hunt the biggest bear that is coming into the bait station even if it's 150lbs.

I believe in Minnesota you can “feed” bears all year long if you’d like to. Its just that a hunted bait site has to be a set distance from where you were feeding them. I think it’s just to much work to try to keep up to feeding bears for long periods of time for most people so that’s why it’s not done.
