How to tell a boar from a sow

Unread postby Freelance Bowhunter » Wed Sep 22, 2021 12:04 am

I put this video together to help people tell the difference. It's difficult at times for even the most experienced bear hunters.

Crocodile Dundee would lift up its skirt to check.

Decided to bring this back to the top so more hunters will be better at telling the difference. When I have talked to bear biologists in Minnesota about the low numbers of tags available, one of the things they always point to is the large number of young sows that are shot each year. If we shoot more male bears, there will be more tags, according to them.

Good luck. Guys waiting 4 plus years for a tag most are shooting the first legal bear and 95 percent can’t tell a cub from a 300 pounder much less a sow from a boar.

Awesome video. I am considering trying to hunt black bear here in New England in the next few years, great info to have and thanks for sharing.

Decent video... I still struggle especially in low light and rushed scenarios. But Im striving to get better. Its a lot different hunting them in pressured states vs Canada, at least from what I have seen on film of canada. Bears here don't stick around long and a lot guys go a lot of days with no opportunity, then shoot the 1st lone bear they see. I would personally like to be better at telling the difference though, and tips are appreciated. Even seasoned guys can make mistakes with judging bear sex.

The only way to get better at it is to keep doing it! I have looked over thousands of them and I still sometimes cannot tell.

The Minnesota bear Guides Assn just had their annual meeting with the DNR bear biologists, and one of the thing the biologists keep using as a reason for the low number of bear tags is that we are shooting too many young bears, especially young sows, which are very vulnerable at baits. I was asked for my opinion and I told them that I believe the longer it takes to get a tag, the worse it will be, because what I'm hearing the hunters say, is that it takes so long to draw, they are going to shoot a dang bear and are less likely to take a chance of not getting one by holding out for a mature male. Most people shoot the first legal bear they see.
