Bear bait suggestions

Unread postby Elite » Wed Jul 13, 2022 9:23 am

These are the options for bear bait at my local feed mill. They don’t have a blend with all the ingredients mixed together. What would be your suggestion? Sold in 55 gallon drums:

Candy-but mix
Pop tarts
Trail mix
Cookies

WI regs so 10 gallons of bait per day allowed. I don’t have time to get bait elsewhere and I’ll only be running one bait…

If I only had one choice. It would be straight mixed nuts.

The trail mix I bought last year was only 25% nuts (peanuts). The rest of the mix was candy, raisins, pretzel's, brownies and popcorn.

Next time I want to buy a barrel of pure mixed nuts.

And Im NOT baiting in the spring/early summer Ever again!

Trail mix is by far your best bet. If they are all the same cost, I would go with that. If some are cheaper go with a 50/50 mix with pop tarts or the candy mix. I'd keep your eye open for a barrel of just nuts for the last 2 weeks before the season starts too. None of what you list will keep them off corn and/or acorns from my experience :D

There is a lot of stuff out there they call trail mix which isn't very good. Make sure it looks like the trail mix you'd find in a bag at Walmart: Nuts, M&Ms, dried fruits, etc.

There are a ton of bear bait sellers mixing in things like petzels, chunks of dark chocolate (which is bad) and other things for fillers. Good trail mix is expensive but worth it!

I watched multiple of your videos today at work regarding baits, stand locations, etc; and I’m feeling more confident in my first season come September.
