Tony’s 1st Bow Bird

Unread postby Arrowbender » Sun May 14, 2023 2:19 am

May be his 1st Turkey ever actually. He’s been along on many of my Turkey jaunts as a tyke but I think this was his first bird.

To be clear he is not a kid. Just my kid. He is 32 and a great hunting partner; just not into it anywhere near “Hunting Beast” mode. Although I am catching glimmers of hope more and more of late.

Anyway; we had been out a few times already and had visuals without much cooperation. I recommended that we sleep in after a Friday evening hunt running & gunning and we could sit in the blind in the pasture where I killed my “Incoming!” Bird the week prior.

It turned out to be a great decision other than the fact I got ZERO foootage.

We were all set up a little after 7 with 3 hen and a Jake deek slow dancing in the morning breeze. I hate hunting out of a blind but we had a very slight drizzle and I can drink coffee so it was easily justified. Did I mention we slept in?

It started out very slow. Faint gobbling in the distance. May have had one answer from the neighbor’s. I started my calling very reserved as I normally do but with the late start and limited activity it was not long before I was cranking it up.

Finally after the 3rd or 4th call sequences; say 5 minutes after my last peep; a hen decides to reach out and ask “what’s all the fuss”. I look at Tony. “It’s ON !” I say.

I reply. She does also. I cut her off immediately.
She ramps it up and so do I. Of course because we’re in blind she is exactly behind us. No open windows because we’re brushed into a tree. She sounds like she’s 80 or so yds out but closing with each reply. The cam is pointed out the front of the blind at the deeks.

I get a chance to look out the back window mid-argument.
Sure enough here she comes. No wait! This is a longbeard! And he is coming hard!

I tell Tony to get turned to shoot out our 9:00 window. Big boy coming in Hot. When I last see the Tom he appears to be on a trajectory to pass the blind at @ 5 yds. I can’t see the action must less film it.

Tony pulls back. I am trying to get the cam turned to catch something hoping he makes it into the deeks, then “Thump” /“WHACK” ! And the unmistakable sound of wings doing a death dance just outside!
