Question for people who took youth hunters last weekend.

Unread postby Casper » Tue Apr 13, 2010 8:43 am

Were the birds in the woods or fields mainly? It seems like they are staying in the woods for the most part. I havent been seeing many birds in the fields where I hunt. Its either they arent hitting fields yet or there was a big winter kill.

For those who had success or close encounters.... were you in the woods or hunting field edge? Thanks.

I also have not been seeing birds in fields where I normally do and I think that is because there are not as many birds as the DNR claims. Sunday where we were hunting the toms stayed around the roost in the woods for about the first hour, strutted in the field in front of us for about 30 mins and then went back into the woods and remained there untill we left at 11 am. We killed a tom later in the evening in a field where they crossing to return back to the roost.

All the the birds that I heard and saw were in the woods and in the swamps. I did not spend a lot of my time in the fields because we were on public. For me every time I have tried to set up on a field on public some other hunter messes it up. So I don't waste my time there anymore.

most of the turkeys i saw were in the field. as soon as they flew down they headed straight for an east facing hayfield where they could sun themselves. but the turkey we shot it was in a woods because we caught them going from roost tree to open field

I've been scouting a lot and the action is in the woods by me. I agree though the bird population doesn't appear to be what it once was! I think the winters of 08 and 09 really affected the hatch. We don't see many jakes by us at all!

"the toms stayed around the roost in the woods for about the first hour, strutted in the field in front of us for about 30 mins and then went back into the woods"

This is what I see the most of.

For us, Saturday they came straight from the roost to the field, however on Sunday, they spent an hour and a half in the woods before coming out. It was the same two toms both mornings. After the hunt on Sat., we moved our tent to where they came out. Guess what, Sunday they came out where we moved from. :x

In the woods in my area there are still alot of acorns, I suspect this is why they are not hitting the fields yet.
