Re: Locator calls
I like a crow call, but on heavy pressured birds a stadium air horn works great for a loud shock gobble

Re: Locator calls
While I don't have the call, anytime a pileated woodpecker fires up I 'expect' to hear a gobble if one is around! Perhaps its due to the infrequency of PW -> gobble ratio vs the crow -> gobble ratio.
I carry the standard owl, crow, dog whistle but you can bet I'll have a stadium air horn next year.
Also worth considering coyote howl & hawk

Re: Locator calls
I don’t use one much. I hoot with my mouth and bring a crow and peacock call in my vest but I can’t remember the last time I used the crow or peacock calls.

Owl for the roost in morning and evenings and a crow once the sun is up - use my mouth for both. Owl always works the best. Occasionally mimic a pileated and have had it work a number of times.

Re: Locator calls
I'll hoot with my own voice some in the morning, but do not typically use any after that. I typically just try to listen when crows and geese fly over, along with calling on a pot call every hundred yards or so.

Re: Locator calls
I carry an owl hooter and coyote howler with a crow call. I feel crow call works best earlier in the season, I feel pressured birds get used to crow calls and owl calls pretty quick.
I’ve had almost guaranteed success with a coyote call. When it comes to roosting a bird that is.
I try my owl call first, if nothing I switch to the coyote call, that always does the trick. I do also carry an air horn with me if I’m trying to roost a bird. Haven’t had it work yet though.
