Live from the Field 2021

Unread postby thwack16 » Sat Mar 20, 2021 9:58 pm

Think it’s time to get this thing going... should be 6 states opened as of sunrise this morning, HI, FL, MS, AL, GA, and TX.

We’ve been open since Monday. Weather hasn’t exactly cooperated and I’ve only been out for a couple of lunch break walks, saw a couple hens on one and found a fresh gobbler track on another so I have an idea of where to start on my close to work public when I start getting enough daylight to hunt pre-work.

Headed to a piece of private instead of fighting the crowds this morning. Should be decent, mid 40s and partly cloudy. Hopefully the birds will sing.

Good luck to everyone this season!

On one that gobbled about 40 times this morning. Super henned up however. Had him at about 75 though could not see him, just on the edge of where I could made out his drumming. Will backside him early in the morning.

SC season opened yesterday. I went out with my 8 year old son after work. We came up on a group of six hens and a longbeard feeding toward us. I waited as long as I could for my son to get a shot but he wouldn't come within 50 and I didn't trust him shooting that far with a 20 gauge. When they started moving away I dropped him.

Nothing like a lunch hour gobbler! Been trying to pull it off on my lunch break for five springs now. Bird hit all 5 calls I made to him and came from about 300 yards away.

Been hitting it fairly hard. 5 more hunts since I killed last week. This morning was seemingly perfect and got a gate where I'd found a gobbler track yesterday on a lunch hour scout/hunt. Absolutely nothing off the roost, as I was easing out I spooked a couple hens in the first hollow from the truck. Quickly called and had a gobbler answer just beyond them but I assume he figured out there was danger shortly after and shut up.

I've been listening before school here in WV for the past week or so. On good weather morning the birds are gobbling good on the limb, but have been shutting up when they fly down.
I leave for Tennessee Friday morning and will be hunting down there for 5-6 days. After that it's pretty much off to the races with WV, MD, PA, and NY scheduled for the season.
Anything worth doing, is worth over doing.
