If you were going to give one tip to a new turkey hunter what would be your top tip?

Move as little as humanly possible to get a shot off. I severely underestimated the vision of turkeys when I first started hunting them.

Don’t over-call! It’s best to let them know where you are and then be quiet.

Don't waste time hunting turkeys when you could be scouting for big bucks!

Patience, they have a different concept of time than we do. On the gear side, I bought a browning turkey strutter chair. Keeps you low to the ground and much better than sitting on the ground. I can sit hours at a time in it. Not bad for running and gunning folds up quick. Have had it 3 years now

Yep...I still screw this up on occasion when they come in silently.

Scout first, hunt second still applies. Just like deer hunting.

Listen to the THP Podcasts on turkeys. I feel like a seasoned turkey vet in only 3 years of hunting them largely in part to it.

Use cover and terrain to hide always in the turkey woods. Don’t walk skylined on a ridge top. Never underestimate a turkeys vision.
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

Get behind a tree or some kind of cover before you call. Even if you run and gun. Birds can come up on you fast!!

If possible hit him as soon as he comes into sight.....don't give him time to analyze the situation. In other words, try to set up so you have a shot at the bird as soon as he clears a terrain feature. Example....as soon as he crests a hill, comes around a corner, etc. If he shows up and doesn't see any sign of a hen, many times he will lock up, turn and walk off.

Be patient and don’t keep moving from spot to spot.If you know birds are in the area pick a spot and stay put. Call lightly every 15 minutes and wait. Too many times I have moved to another spot then ended coming back to my original spot and bump birds.

There is no substitute for experience.

I am confident I have messed up almost every way possible.

Scout and listen to find Turkeys then put yourself in the game and see what works and what doesn’t.

I enjoy every hunt especially the ones the Tom teaches me something new.
