May tactics

Unread postby Bowhunting Brian » Tue May 10, 2022 11:16 am

My time period is this week. What's your strategy for this time of year. I've never hunted this late.

Well, I'm far from a pro, but I would say walk and listen. Don't be surprised with a gobble at any time, then go to work. They're looking for love in all the wrong places without hens in tow

Hunting mountains my tactic is head for the high country. It’s just getting green and still cool up there and gobblers seem to be talkative later in the season than down at low elevations
Some do. Some don't. I just might...

I’ve only shot one turkey in May so I’m not much help. Gotten most of mine the last 10 days of April. The THP has videos of hunting the first week of June in Michigan. They were successful.Might help watching it

Walk and call. Slow down when I find sign. Usually the last couple weeks of May are best for me. Tom's are looking for the last breeding hens and are covering a lot of ground. Just need to find a tom in the right mood. I've heard people say Tom's get call shy on public by this time of the year but this is actually when calling works best for me.

This heat has movement to a minimum, and they are really being quiet.... Im finding more huntable movements at dawn and the last hour or two... midday they seem to be staying in timber and unresponsive. its a huge difference from just a week ago

I go past private fields that have tons of turkeys literally all the time throughout the morning and day so I get a feel for current patterns. Mornings the first few hours (sun up to like 9-10) they’ve been somewhat active, then not much, then late afternoon in shaded strut zones. The hens have scattered, so it looks like the toms are on the prowl. Last year I also experienced quiet midday.

I scout for deer, that's my May routine as we don't have good public turkey close by

Interesting on the way home tonight seeing multiple gobblers flocked together in fields a few hours before sundown. Saw it a few times in different places.

Yesterday it was 90 here in WI and my trail cam in a field showed the most turkeys out of any day of the year so far. Seemed like Toms were going crazy looking for nesting hens.......i was at work
