New turkey gun

Unread postby Rich3006 » Wed Feb 15, 2023 6:50 pm

Who uses a 20 ga. and if you do what load do you use and how well does it work?

I just got a win. super x pump. 26 inch barrel, sling swivels, screw in chokes etc. I bought it for rabbits and squirrels but seems like a perfect light weight turkey gun. Always looking to shed weight and it's over a pound lighter than my 12 ga.

I just bought a 20gauge Mossberg turkey with a red dot for this year. Bought some TSS to pattern. With the right ammo and choke a 20 gauge works just fine for turkey. I have a buddy that uses a single shot .410. He shoots TSS and a very tight constriction choke.

I went to a 20 ga about 10 years ago. The first year I shot Federal heavyweight #7’s, it did great with those and was a 40-45 yard gun. Started loading my own TSS the following year and it is amazing with #9’s. A 20 with the right choke and load will really lay the hammer on a bird.

Here is the 870 I use most of the time.

Running an Encore 20ga with an Indian Creek tube and handload TSS #9s.

The core of that pattern was the hottest core I've fired. 375+/- in 10" at 40 yards.

The 20" count is wicked consistent. Always runs 535+/- a few. The 10" varies a bit. 315-375. Warm Temps and a squeaky clean bore and she's gunna throw a hot 10" I've found. Colder Temps, dirty bore and the 10" has less hits...but they always end up in the 20"

I LOVE it. 42" overall length. Light and handy. Less recoil than the 12s. And she hammers.
