waiting sucks...but you gotta do it! me personally, i love to stalk them...
best thing i can say is just sit still and call every so often..eventally they will show up..also, set-up on the edge of a field, that way the toms can see your decoys from far away

Are you calling before fly down? Cuz if he's on roost and double or triple gobbles at your calls, SHUTUP AND WAIT. If you call, you'll make him go quiet and he'll just sit under his roost tree strutting all morning until a hen comes by.

tree yelp, fly down, old hen yelp and then shut up once he gobbles

purrs and leaf scratching

a second hunting over calling as they slowly walk away

jake yelps

time his first gobble and set up under the tree an hour prior

like deer I am an ambush style hunter I love them having no idea I am in the area so like many states the IN birds were silent last spring I had tried numerous times to get them to gobble and hunted hard on a couple of properties- birds were quiet and decoy shy. My success came from hunting spots that I knew they would travel. Quiet birds still mate, roost, and eat so I began setting up on travel routes, strut zones and food fields. I had birds hanging up because of decoys so on my final hunt I left the look-a-like birds at home. I came in early, never made a sound and let the owls do the work. two toms gobbled hard 1 time and then nothing, before i knew it they flew down right on top of my set up and minutes after legal hours the game was over. whether they sounded off or not I was going to that strut zone because I knew toms were catching hens I guess my advice is hunt palced birds will be regardless of their volume in the morning or night ....certain roads, food plots, and strut zones will be used so put in the time and be patient

Killed my biggest tom walking fence rows in the rain. Seems they are always out in fields when it rains so I jumped him out of a fencerow and shot him like a rabbit.

A lot of times I notice toms going silent is due to pressure of hunters - I sometimes have luck using duck calls instead of the usual crow, owl or yote call for locating and putting to bed. I think its a different approach that trows a curve at the ol toms as everybody has the same calls and I believe they catch on to this - just my $.02

The biggest toms are always the quiet ones where I hunt. I setup in known strut zones or in an area that has 2-3 fields interconnected. I simply wait them out and have killed most of these old birds between 10 and 2 in the afternoon. Long days but worth it when your trying to arrow one. Another trick I use is the fighting purr call...It's simply deadly on mature toms. I can't tell you how many quiet toms I've had come in to this call. I've had them fly, run, and sneak in trying to figure out who is in a fight.

My best method is to scout and find a good place to sit that they like to visit. Then just wait them out.

[quote="BigHuntI love using my hawk screamer[/quote]

I lost my hawk screemer. I had one in college for pheasants, it would take care of a running bird pretty good for us poor no dog college kids.

Then I started using it in MI for turkeys, I hope that thing turns up.
