Wow, I missed this thread. Great examples of what it takes to kill big woods deer. Excellent teaching opportunity for anyone trying to figure out where to find "the needle in the big woods haystack"
Congrats on the awesome buck kills!.

Re: getting in the game
This isn’t as good as a topo view but it would be too recognizable to post a map. I found this spot right after hunting season when scouting. I found a scrape (yellow x) up top and old rubs, which were near a thicket(pink). There was sign of a doe group bedding and browsing throughout the thicket on the yellow areas. I always think if deer are comfortable there during gun season, they’ll be back when the pressure is on next year. I hung a camera this summer and had several doe using the area, I thought a buck could scent check the area easily with a favorable wind and stay hidden in the thick stuff and he could take any of the finger ridges to escape if needed. I thought a buck would bed or use the purple x to monitor the doe group. My route was green and the buck’s route was orange. I climbed at the blue x knowing I had to shoot quick if they were going to cross my trail. He came in with the wind to his back and he could see down the ridge. It was raining pretty good the whole hunt so I know they couldn’t hear my entry. I accessed from the side because I didn’t know if the deer fed in the bottom or the ridge top over night. In this case the buck came from above me, along the side of the highest point down toward my stand.

Bench buck near select cut pines. It rained on me in the tree from 5am-7am buck came through at 7:40 eating browse. I recorded him with my cell phone the day before and passed on him. I showed our kids the video and they were mad I didn’t shoot him. I told them if I saw him again I would shoot him. Saw him the next morning.

From 2020 season. Shot this buck with my bow in the rain. He was working down from a pine thicket eating browse, came through a pinch point headed to bed. The Walmart poncho did the trick in the rain.

From the 2021 season. My brother got this buck down wind of a thermal hub where there is an annual scrape, and a cut area nearby.

Re: getting in the game
I got lucky and killed this public land 9pt on Thanksgiving Day. I hunted from the ground since we had a dinner to go to. I had to start back to the truck at 9am so we could make it to the dinner. The buck came in at 8:50 and he came from the Lee side of ridge crossing over to windward side. I got lucky and shot him before he cut my wind.

Killed this old public land buck over the weekend. I was blessed to have the opportunity. Had a picture of him about a month ago and kept looking for his area. We ended up meeting 3/4 of a mile from where I got the picture.

Assuming handle on the landscape that it was Black Warrior. Only ventured up that way once while I lived in Bham. I usually hunted Cahaba and Tuskegee Natl Forest. Congrats on a great AL buck!
